#97660 - 03/19/03 07:27 PM 500 Error - bug or hack?
Anonymous

An apology if this is the wrong place to ask, (please don't be mad) but I couldn't find it covered in any of the topics and have a pretty distraught member.

One member was only able to get a message posted after trying for hours, he kept getting a 500 Internal Server Error.

I'm wondering if it could have been caused through being logged in on two computers at once. If two people are trying to use the same ID would this happen?

I'm asking because this user thinks his password was hacked to prevent him from posting. The only time he could get in he would find the person who would most likely have hacked it had just posted a message, i.e., the hacker had to logout of one account to post under her own username.

I thought it could be a known bug, but if not, I think he might have a case, because he was at it for some time, tried manually deleting the cookies, did a shutdown, reboot, etc., over a 24 hour period... as soon as he changed his password he didn't have a problem any more. (And the suspected person is a proud hacker, and hates him.)

Is there a Bug that follows this kind of pattern of getting a 500 for ages, getting in once, getting a 500 for another few hours, fixed with a password change?

I don't want to accuse anybody but I also don't want people abusing the board or other members.

Would really appreciate some help with this, thanks.

You can be logged in, using the same account on two or more different computers at the same time, without any problems.

The 500 error leads me to believe there was a temporary problem with your server. This is positively not a hacking attempt.

If someone else was using his account and trying to post at the same time they would have been presented with the Flood error message (if its turned on -- otherwise no error message at all.)

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. It's good to know about the simultaneous logon, but why would it only happen to one person, though?
There were post flood messages interspersed with the 500, but I thought that would be from trying to resend too soon after the first one failed.

btw, don't know if it matters, but the board is 5.45c

Jimbo

hi, and thanks. Yes, way overdue for an upgrade. Can you tell me which forum I should be asking my question in? Have a couple of similar questions.

If you scroll down to the forum listing one level higher than this forum, at the bottom you'll see the v5 support forum for the oldies.

But one of the mods should move this post there shortly. They're slow around here, but it usually gets done.
