I wanted to split a forum into 2, so my idea was to lock it (as a mods only post) while I move some topics to a new forum.
I followed the following steps:
-Changed the permissions for the forum to mods only.
-created a new forum.
-Renamed the old one
-Changed the forum order so the new one would be under the right order in the category.
-Updated the thread
-Went to the board (topic count on both forums 0)
-Nothing worked
-went back and forth to update the thread but the count was still 0.
-Since this was urgent, I had to create a another forum and moved the files through FTP to the new one. They show up again.
It made me sweet for a couple of hours.
Is this a "common feature" so I won't do it again? Or what are the right steps?

Changing a public forum into a private forum "hides" the threads.

Check out this thread for a handy mass move utility which will do what you'll need: http://www.scriptkeeper.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=006844
