#99163 - 10/29/03 11:00 PM Problems with accessing private forums

See this old closed thread for problem details.

One of our users has finally traced it down to 3rd party cookies being blocked by Zone Alarm Pro. Here's his post:
[QUOTE]It seems to be Zone Alarm blocking 3rd party cookies. These cookies are placed by ad networks and Internet marketing companies, usually not the site you are visiting. What [this bulletin board] does with them I can't say.

Zone Alarm, when set, blocks these, and in the case of [our private forum], it is required that you allow them through.

With ZA it's possible to allow specific cookies in while keeping the others out. What we need to do is change the Zone settings to show when something is being blocked, allowing you to customize that particular site without changing settings for other sites. If this is all too confusing, don't worry about it, here are the instructions:

1. Double Click the Zone Icon in the lower right system tray area of the task bar. This will bring forth the ZA setup window.
2. Click the "Main" tab if necessary to go to that page.
3. Click the "custom" button under the cookies section.
4. Put the check mark in the box to re-activate the Privacy Advisor. You can now close the ZA window. When you try to access a web address that has a blocked item, a small warning box will open in the bottom right corner of the task bar area. That's what you'll be looking for when you try to access "Sightings"
5. Log in to [our private forum] as usual and be ready to click on the little box that pops up. It fades away quickly so be ready. When it pops up, click the "Click here for details" link. That opens up the customizing box for the site being blocked.
6. You'll see the Tug site in a row followed by some check marks and an x. The X is what's blocking the 3rd party cookie. Click it and then in the box that pops up, click "allow". That should fix you up.
7. The Privacy Advisor box will drive you looney if you allow it to pop up all the time so make it go away by checking the little "Turn Off" box the next time it pops up.

That should fix you up. Let me know if it works. I've only tested it on myself so I can only hope it works for you.[/QUOTE]Only thing I don't understand is, why would there be 3rd party cookies?

From what I understand, they are 3rd party because they aren't on the list of 'accepted sites' in the Zone Alarm settings (though that may not be the exact technical explanation in the new versions of Zone Alarm, its the general idea). From what I've read, ZoneAlarm reads 3rd party cookies from sites not on the acceptable site list as being ads and blocks them. I wasn't able to confirm this on the ZoneAlarm site as their support area requires that you have downloaded or purchased the product.

We have a FAQ on how to tweak the firewall that comes with XP and Zone Alarm here that your users may find useful: http://infopopfaq.infopop.net/0/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=10009141&f=6240938335&m=6980943942
