Note, many people do complain about the search functions being non-intuitive. Here's a thread I put up to help people learn how to search which may lend insight into the awkward things you need to do to make certain searches happen (like only topic starters, etc.)

The search area is definitely something that will be worked on as alot of your users have requested. We switched to MySQL full text indexing for 7.0, but the basic functionaltiy has remained unchanged. Once we make sure we have any/all problems worked out with that then we'll give the functionality itself an overhaul. That's something I'll try to work into 7.1

Sounds great. I think the point that one of the users made about "if it doesn't work like google, it'll be misunderstood" is a good one. And I would definitely just add a check box to choose to search thread starters versus whole threads. It's much easier to understand than telling them to use -RE:. In any case -re: doesn't even really work if people change the default subject.
