SCARCE COLONIAL MODEL702 ART DECO “NEW WORLD” EARTH SPACE GLOBE RADIO

This sale isfor a striking and unusual 1930’s Colonial “New World” dual wave “Globe” of theEarth radio. This radio was designed by Raymond Loewy, the fabled creator ofdesigns for everything from locomotives to electric shavers. The top and bottom have brass bullet shaped caps with a compass directions on a disk underneath (remove knop to open top half of the globe). Inside there is a switch to change from AC to DC - currently set to AC. The radio was tested on 5-8-2015 and works (turns on/off- dial moves - volume)and the dial lights up so you can view the tuning station channel, but could not get a radio station - I am not an expert on radios and I know the older ones sometimes need additional antenna signal or more patience than I can afford! There are two hairline cracks as shown, rubs to some of the map and lettering from age - damage to the radio screen - easy to replace. If you have additional questions please ask as I am not an expert on radios. The theme and classof this radio set if far and beyond most radios it fits into almost any setting with prestige and a class all of its own - a real show stopper! Circling the ivory globe at its equator is ametal ring. Large, wheel-shaped plated knobs control power, volume andtuning. The radio is made with anunusual two-chassis design, dividing the electronics between the globe and thebase. In addition to natural Bakelite,the Globe was offered with black and ivory cases. Regardless of color, itpresents a very dramatic appearance. Inside is a conventional 1930s AMreceiver, using five tubes (25Z5, 6A7, 73, 78, and 43). An external antenna isa necessity. Since the Globe has no RF amplifier, the longer the antenna, thebetter.
\"Raymond Loewy was a pioneer in industrial design who worked with over 200 companies and transformed many basic household items including refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, radios, cameras, and telephones along with cars (Studebaker) and product designs(Lucky Strike, Coca Cola) into streamlined forms.
For over fifty years Raymond Loewy\'s practice, R.L.A set aesthetic standards in industrial design. By 1951 the firm\'s designs were so prolific that Loewy claimed \'the average person leading a normal life… is bound to be in contact with…\" a Raymond Loewy design.
Other Loewy notable designs include a prototype for bullet shaped aluminium pencil sharpener, the Colonial \"Globe\" Bakelite radio from 1933, the 1959 fleet of Dorsett boats, and several Emerson radios such as the 511 \"Moderne\". \"used from decophobia\"
