The Goodwin Sands are a treacherous bank of sandbars just off the coast of England. On a fateful day in January of 1809, the Admiral Gardner and two other ships had just set sail outward bound to India when they encountered a terrible storm. Despite heroic efforts to maneuver the ships with frozen rigging they were all wrecked as they were swept onto the Sands by mountainous waves and gale winds. The Admiral Gardner went to the bottom with its cargo of cannonballs, anchors, copper ingots, iron bars and a shipment of newly minted copper coins by the East India Company. This is one of those coins.

This “10-Cash” coin bears the East India Company Coat of Arms on one side and its value in the Mughul script on the reverse side. These coins were struck at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England. They were the first in the world to be minted on the newly invented steam powered coin press that was developed by the inventors of the steam engine: Matthew Boulton and James Watt. The coins remained undiscovered until 1985 when an intrepid group of Englishmen located the treasure. They began a long and dangerous salvage operation that eventually netted a group of wooden barrels, tightly packed with copper coins. Some of the coins were damaged by the corrosive effects of 175 years under the ocean, but most were found in amazingly good condition.

This East India Company 10-Cash Copper Coin is a genuine 1808 copper coin that was minted in Birmingham, England by the Soho Mint for use in India. It was recovered from the wreck of the brig Admiral Gardner, which sank in a violent storm on January 25, 1809 off the coast of England.
