15\" Vintage Bona Allen? Antique Western Saddle, good condition new fleece
Price: US $122.00
This is a lovely old vintage saddle, made just as the padded seats were being introduced, early 50\"s. Like so many of the saddles made in that period, it was made to do a hard days work and survive.
The saddle has a 15\" seat, measured from a spot just below the base of the horn to the center of the cantle rim. It has, as was common to the period, a narrow gullet, but the shoulders are fairly free, making it somewhat more adaptable. It is also round skirted, which allows it to fit a wide variety of lengths of a horse\'s back. The saddle did undergo some restoration not too long ago. Although all of the main part of the saddle leather is original, and beautifully carved, new fleece has been added to the underside. The tooling on the saddle is all hand done, is deep and very clear to this day. The rigging is solid and sound, as is the tree. The main structure of the horn is tight and without movement, but the leather on the front of the horn will move ever so slightly when pressed hard. The stirrup leathers are solid and show very little surface cracking, although some does exist directly around the holes punched for length adjustment. Adjustment is made by the use of Blevins buckles, which are old but work very well. The stirrups are leather bound, probably slightly newer, and are in very good condition. Near and off billets have been recently replaced, and are very good. The fleece, which is relatively new, is excellent. There is one leather concho set that is stretched out a little from where it used to be on the left side of the horn in a front view. If you look carefully in photo 3, I believe you will notice it. Also, when the fleece is replaced, the bottom skirts are removed and the new fleece is stitched back on (in this case a very good job) but the stitching which existed between the upper and lower skirts is no longer in use. I know of no reason why this should affect the usefulness of the saddle, since 98% of all saddles made do not have it to start with. This saddle was well constructed and made, as I said earlier, to use and last. It weighs just over 26 pounds.
