1791 Washington Large Eagle Cent, LOVELY EF COIN, sharp and pleasing, NO RESERVE
Price: US $570.00

1791George Washington Large Eagle Cent. Baker 15. Rarity-3. Extremely Fine, a very wellstruck example of this large, heavy issue (basically the size of an early dateU.S. large cent since they were made in England in hope of acquiring a contractcoinage for the United Staes - a year before the US mint was authorized and twoyears before it began producing regular issue coins on its own). Thelegends are strong and full, as is the date. The design detail is sharp,as expected for a coin to merit the EF grade, with rub visible only onWashington\'s hair and epaulet and the eagle\'s top feathers. Medium brown, the surfaces are hard, though there are a half dozen or so nicks on eitherside, the obverse ones more visible because they are mostly in the fields -- oneof the problem with a larger size coin is that the bigger fields tend tomagnify the appearance of circulation marks. These nicks are definitelyold, acquired during the coins brief use as currency, and are not as disturbingas if they were newer. The otherwise hard surfaces help a lot with theoverall eye appeal, especially since the coin is free of roughness.Pedigreed back to the November, 1979 sale of the Dr. William Bartlettcollection, held by Bowers and Ruddy Galleries - with the original lot ticket fromthat sale included with the coin. Few collectors active today werearound 35 years ago for this sale, so few original tickets probablysurvive. Thisgeneral type is pictured and listed on Page 80 of the 2013 edition of TheRedbook [which has had massive pricing updates, and is now FAR more accuratethan it ever has been, even though it resulted in lowering of prices for manycommon type coins!], where this type is priced at $750 in Extremely Fine; thisone is offered here WITHOUT RESERVE.
