ITEM: Identified early American Folk Art oil painting portrait on board of Samantha Mary (Parker) Cook (1808-1874?) of Cato, New York. She married David Cook (1804-1863) who was born in Little Compton, RI and died in Conquest, NY. The painting is very nicely done and unsigned. It has good detail and strong color, with piercing eyes and a somber expression. I can find well documented genealogical/ historic references to this Samantha Mary (Parker) Cook. Within DAR literature (which lists her death as being in 1847) she is the daughter of David Parker ( 1731-1839 Cato, New York) who served in the Massachusetts Militia of the Revolutionary War. Her husband, David Cook, was the son of David Cook (1731-1823), who was a lieutenant in Col. Knox\'s regiment of the Continental Artillery 1776-1777, and in 1778 rose to the rank of Captain, serving until the end of the war. This from Lineage Book - National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Volumes 55-56.

WHEN MADE: Looks like 1830s-40s

SIZE: The painting is approximately 16 1/8\" x 21 1/2\" and framed it is approximately 20 1/2\" x 26 1/2\"

CONDITION: There is some crackling to the painting, which is done on board. This can be seen in the close-up pictures. There appear to be no touch-ups or repairs and I have not attempted to clean the painting. The painting is in a very good vintage (but not original) gold gesso-giltwood frame and the backing board is vintage but not original, as well. The applied paper identifying the subject appears to be from the original paper backing of the painting as it would have been framed with a paper backing. Overall, very good antique condition.  PLEASE VIEW ALL PICTURES FOR ADD\'L INFORMATION ON CONDITION.

I have reviewed the information I initiallyfound from the DAR registry and realized that I misinterpreted some of what I was reading. The information can\'t be printed out or copied and pasted so I had to flip back and forth and just misidentified the connections. I apologize for not getting this right the first time

    Here\'s the correct information:

David Cook (1804-63) married Samantha M. Parker Cook (1808-47 or 74 as written on the back of the picture)

David and Samantha\'s respective parents were Joseph Cook (1776-1813) and Lydia Benson (1785-1863) and Dan Parker (1762-1839) and Anna Spring (no dates identified for birth or death). Dan Parker was placed on the pension roll of New York (1833) for service as private, Massachusetts Militia.

Joseph Cook\'s parents (David Cook\'s grandparents) were David (1731-1823) and Alice Cook (1752-1815). David Cook was a lieutenant in Colonel Knox\'s regiment of Continental artillery, 1776-77 and 1778 rose to the rank of captain, serving to the end of the war.

The words googled to find this information were Samantha Parker Cato New York.
