1855-1865 BOSTON Silversmith & Jewelry H.B. STANWOOD STORECARD - CIVIL WAR Token
This is a very nice and very old Store Card Token from H. B. Stanwood & Company of Boston, Massachusetts. This fine Jewelry and Silverware Store was located at 253 Washington Street.

Henry Burrill Stanwood was born in 1817 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. A noted Silversmith, he was a Partner from 1839 to 1850 with William Harris in Boston as Harris & Stanwood, listed in the 1845 city directory at 29 Trem Row. He worked from 1850 to 1855 as a Silversmith and Jeweler as H. B. Stanwood & Co., listed in the 1850 city directory at 253 Washington Street. He was then a partner from 1855 to 1860 with James D. Stanwood and George D. Low as H. B. Stanwood & Co., also listed in the 1855 city directory at 253 Washington Street. He then became a Partner from 1865 to 1868 with Benjamin Shreve as Shreve, Stanwood & Co., listed in the 1865 city directory at 226 Washington Street. He died August 7, 1868.
This token was obviously issued sometime between 1850 and 1865. It may or may not have been used as a cent replacement like a Civil War Token.

The Token: A very presentable example, it saw some use and has a few light marks and one spot of verdigris on the reverse. But it is strictly original, and has never been cleaned or abused, a very nice piece overall. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
