1870 Plains Indian Pipe Tomahawk Buffalo Head Cutaway Forged Head File Branded
Price: US $841.77
It doesn\'t get much better than this!! For sale is a very special piece of Native American history, it\'s a pipe tomahawk and it\'s kind of a dual symbol. The tomahawk\'s a sign of war, and the pipe is a sign of peace. And it works as a pipe and as a tomahawk, the handle is a little weak to use as a tomahawk, but the Plains Indians and tribes all throughout the U.S. carried these as signs of authority. The stem on it or the haft, is ash, diamond shaped, and it\'s been decorated with hot file branding marks. The meaning of these marks is unknown in the collector community. Possibly just decoration or a ceremonial use. Beautiful piece. The head is forged iron with a nice (rare) buffalo head cutaway in it. Clearly you can see the forging seams in the eye.  The haft is original to the head and has just the smallest bit of warp due to age, its hard to see but I thought I should mention it. This one is most likely a presentation quality pipe tomahawk owned by a senior member of the tribe. Circa 1850-1870. I don\'t know a lot about the exact origin but my husband bought this at an sale in Casper Wyoming in the late 1960\'s. The stem is 23 inches long and the head of the tomahawk is 10 inches long.
I hate to sell this but my husband has long since passed away and I need to sell some of his collection to make ends meet. I just hope this goes to a good home, someone who will appreciate it. I will listen to reasonable offers. Good luck and God bless!
