1870\'s AMERICAN BEER / BREWERY TIN LITHOGRAPH ADVERTISING SIGN By WELLS & HOPE
Price: US $1713.00
Exceptionally Rare and wonderful, original 1870’s Chromolithograph on Tin, American Beer Company / Brewery Advertising Sign for \"George A. Basserman, Rock Brewery Lager Beer\" of New haven, Connecticut lithographed by the premier American Sign Maker - Wells & Hope of Philadelphia. This fantastic, 19th century, Tin Lithograph Sign measures approx. 27 1/2” by 19 1/2” and is mounted to its original wooden stretcher / frame (overall size with stretcher is 29\" by 21\"). The sign was manufactured by one of the finest American manufacturers of Lithographed Tin Advertising Signs - Wells & Hope Co of Philadelphia and is a simple but fine example of the high quality Tin Lithographed Signs produced by this important American Sign Maker. It is also among the earliest examples we have ever come across!! The mark of Wells & Hope can be found at the lower right hand edge and includes text that reads \"Pat. Sept. 12, \'71\".

The Sign is a classic, early American Brewery / Beer Sign done in red, black and gold inks with text that reads \"George A. Basserman / Rock Brewery / Lager Beer\" and \"New Haven / Conn.\". At each corner there is the trade mark of Basserman\'s \"Rock Brewery\" and at the center a sun shaped device. This is among the very earliest Tin Lithograph Beer Signs we have ever come across. Although the Patent date refers to Wells & Hope\'s patent for lithography on tin and not the date of the Sign itself, we are confident that this Sign was produced in the 1870\'s.

George A. Basserman was a noted brewery owner in the Cedar Hill neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut during the late 19th century. Born in Germany in 1832, and came to New Haven in 1851.Basserman was owner of the Rock Brewery on State and Rock St. He blasted a cellar in at the foot of East Rock to start his brewery under which he excavated a cellar, 200 feet deep, 24 feet wide, and 16 feet high, for storing his brewings. The average production of this brewery amounts to from 1 5,000 to 20,000 barrels a year. Once in business, he made a large bottling plant. The brewery proper comprises a three-story building, partly of stone, 185 by 50 feet in dimensions, while the attached sheds and barns cover an area 688 by 50 feet. It was also remembered for its authentic German beer gardens, built next to the brewery.

This rare, original Wells & Hope, Rock Brewery Advertising Sign displays nicely but is in good condition only - the colors are bright and the Sign has what we used to call visual \"guts\". The surface of has loss with an area of loss at the lower right hand corner which is associated with a shallow, dome shaped dent. There is also scattered surface loss from old scratches and flaking. The surface of the Sign is stable and there is no active flaking or deterioration. As stated above, with all faults, this wonderful and likely one-of-a-kind Beer Sign displays nicely and is certainly a candidate for a professional restoration.

An exceptionally rare and wonderful, original 1870’s Chromolithograph on Tin, American Beer Company / Brewery Advertising Sign for \"George A. Basserman, Rock Brewery Lager Beer\" of New haven, Connecticut lithographed by the premier American Sign Maker - Wells & Hope of Philadelphia and, with all faults still a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
