1890s NATIVE AMERICAN YUROK / KAROK INDIAN BASKETRY HAT / HEADDRESS HUPA #2
Price: US $237.06
Very rare and very beautiful, ca1890\'s Native American Northern California Hupa / Hoopa Area Yurok- Karok Indian Basketry Hat / Headdress. This rather delicate and outstanding late 19th century Basketry Cap measure approx. 6 1/4\" in diameter and approx. 3 1/4\" tall at the central crown. The wonderful, geometric decoration and the high quality of the tight weave make this a simply wonderful display piece.

This wonderful Northern California Indian Basketry Cap is made using various grasses of different colors including river willow stick, river willow root, bear claw grass, etc. The design is a repeating pattern of triangles and bands in brown and black against a buff colored background.

This type of Basketry Hat was worn by women from various Northern California Tribes including the Paiute, Hupa, Yurok and Karuk. In general, the cap protected the head from chafing caused by the tumpline of a burden basket but also to keep pitch out of the hair when collecting pine nuts during annual harvests. Caps were also used as units of measure for tobacco, seeds, and other materials. The Hupa, Yurok and Karuk recognize four genres of caps: work, dress, widow\'s, and men\'s. All four have recognizable features — either In design, shape, or use of weaving materials.

The Basketry Cap offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. They are NOT reproductions or modern recreations but an original Yurok- Karok style Hat crafted in the late 19th century. The Headdress / Hat comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1890\'s Northern California Indian Basketry Cap in very good condition. The weave is tight and strong and the Cap displays beautifully. There are 2 very tight breaks in the body of the Cap - these are much easier seen from the inside looking out and they do not detract significantly from the beauty of the Cap when displayed. There is no damage at the rim but there is an old museum collection identification number neatly painted at the top of the crown. The surface is clean and exhibits a stunningly beautiful, age appropriate and uniform patina throughout. All elements of the Basketry Cap are original and there has been no repairs or restorations - it is 100% original and 100% beautiful.

A very rare and very beautiful, ca1890\'s Native American Northern California Hupa / Hoopa Area Yurok- Karok Indian Basketry Hat / Headdress and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
