Here is a very rare U.S.S. Battleship Maine 1 1/2” diameter advertising token that could have been from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. There is a good luck horseshoe embedded in the reverse side of the coin. This horseshoe was made from the U.S.S. Maine’s wreckage. This aluminum advertising token has a strange mix of subject matter and embossed design. The face shows two yoked oxen with the slogan “Ye Dairy Farm.” The ribbon under their heads reads “Souvenir.” The other writing reads “N.Y. 109 Nights - Chicago 133 Nights - Phila. 132 Nights.” All these cities had World Expositions and Fairs. The aluminum back portion reads “This is to certify that the U.S. Government had delivered to the W.F. Doll Mfg. Co. N.Y. the entire amount of steel saved from the wreck of the Battleship Maine.” Also embossed is “Signed by W.C. Gibson Commander U.S.N. in Charge, General Delivery of Stores.” The embedded horseshoe made from the Maine’s wreckage reads “Maine Feb. 15, 1898.” The top has a small drilled hole for a chain or pin.
