Make sure to check out all of my sales after you\'ve looked at this one. I\'m listing another eclectic assortment of museum quality antiques and collectibles this week, and I suspect that there will be something of interest to just about everybody.
Here\'s an early Columbia AQ cylinder phonograph with its original AQ 10\" cone horn. The machine is wholly original. This was Columbia\'s cheapest, most simply designed cylinder phonograph, and it rarely surfaces in complete condition, much less with no reproduction parts.
Condition of the phonograph is good throughout, and it\'s still working, albeit with gear noise. There\'s tarnish and oxidation on the nickel, as you\'d expect, and the black enamel on the bedplate is worn, but it\'s still presentable. The large diaphragm floating reproducer is in good condition, with a good jewel and good mica. The unique combination carriage and feedscrew (a small strip of pressed tin, that\'s it) is in good condition, and it moves along the feedscrew as the motor winds down.
The original AQ horn is in outstanding condition. No significant dings or dents, and very nice original paint everywhere. This is an exceptional AQ horn.
The motor is original, the motor cover is original, and the spring is still good. The phonograph plays, but as noted above, there\'s audible gear noise. Also, there\'s not enough torque to make it all the way through a cylinder without needing to crank the spring additionally; however, neither of those issues detracts significantly from the machine\'s appeal or its collectibility, because gear noise and a weak motor are pretty much the norm for this phonograph.
It was a dirt cheap machine when it was new, and consequently, not much in terms of performance can or should be expected of it now that it\'s 110 years old.
That\'s about it. I will carefully prep everything for shipping and pack everything carefully and properly. I\'ve been shipping fragile antique phonographs and wireless sets for years, and I know how to get them to you safely. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
