1905 HMV Victor Monarch Senior D Phonograph w/Orig. Red Horn * Huge & Stunning
Price: US $1525.00
I\'m closing out July with one of the best line-ups of mechanical, technological and musical antiques I\'ve had the pleasure of offering in a single week in the 20 years I\'ve been on . Make sure to check out all of my sales after you look at this one. Even if you\'re only a casual collector, I suspect there will be something of interest to you.Here\'s a gorgeous, all-original HMV Monarch Senior phonograph manufactured and marketed by Victor\'s UK partner, the Gramophone Company, ca. 1905. As you can see in the pictures, the phonograph itself is almost identical to the Victor D, but the horn is quite another story. Almost two feet deep, with a 24\" diameter bell, it was one of the largest flower horns ever sold with a disc machine. Though it would likely topple many phonographs, the Monarch Senior -- basically a Monarch Special on steroids -- has no trouble supporting it (and could probably manage a horn that was even larger).Condition of the phonograph and horn is excellent. Cabinet finish is original, and the original cabinet decal is almost perfect. There\'s a nick in the underside of the right front cabinet corner, but as you can see, it doesn\'t intrude on the carved trim, which is almost perfect on all four sides. The back-bracket is excellent, with a beautiful century-old patina. Likewise, the nickel-plated fittings are clean, the original turntable felt exhibits only moderate wear, the small hardware is original and in excellent condition. The original His Master\'s Voice Exhibition reproducer is in excellent mint condition, and it sounds great. The gearing and motor are original and in excellent working order. The phonograph plays quietly, and the turntable doesn\'t wobble. The horn, like the phonograph, is original throughout, with no damage, no repairs, no issues. Some paint wear and scratches are evident on both the interior and the exterior, but for a horn this old and this substantial, its condition is exceptional. The horn elbow is original, and it\'s in excellent condition, too. The phonograph\'s most obvious concession to age is the crank, which has some pitting and oxidation as you can see. Otherwise the machine has held up remarkably well for the past 100+ years, and if treated kindly, it will likely last another century. Or more. The phonograph plays 78 RPM records, and it plays with them excellent volume.
I\'ll include a couple of early records, and if you get tired of listening to them, there are plenty of other titles available on and elsewhere. Thousands of early acoustic 78 RPM records show up on on a weekly basis, and they typically sell for just a few dollars each. In addition to the records, I\'ll also send a long an original servicing receipt (in French) that I found tucked inside the cabinet. Looks almost as old as the phonograph, but it\'s still legible and mostly intact (though wrinkled, as you can see in the pics.)I\'ve been selling and shipping antique phonographs, antique radios and antique scientific apparatus for more than 25 years. When you purchase an antique phonograph from me, you\'ll receive a phonograph that arrives safely because it\'s been carefully packed (by me, not by some well-intentioned but nonetheless confounded, doe-eyed teenager working at the UPS store who wouldn\'t know a phonograph from a farm tool), and you\'ll receive a phonograph that includes thorough but easy-to-understand set-up and operating instructions, so you won\'t be left scratching your head, trying to figure out how it works. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your \"bargain\" arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you\'ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.That\'s about it. I will carefully prepeverything for shipping andpack everything carefully and properly. Due to the size of the horn, the machine can only be shipped to physical addresses (no PO boxes) in the United States and Canada. sale participants with no prior response history, or with hidden response, should contact me before placing a offer. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
