1920 Toyodo & Co., Clockwork \"Boy Feeding Rooster\" in Orig. Box
Price: US $1825.00
New TemplateToy Name:Toyodo & Co., Clockwork\"Boy Feeding Pecking Rooster\" in Original BoxVery earlypost-WWI Japanese tin toy. Fresh to market attic find. NM toy inEXC+ to NM box.
Year: 1920 Description:Very early Japanese wind-up tin toys produced right after World War I aredifficult to find in any condition. Their boxes are almost nonexistent.Which is why I couldn\'t believe it when Irecently found this magnificent museum quality tin toy at a smallsale in upstate NY. I was told that it was just found in an attic. It appears to have never been played with.There\'s no official name for the toy so \"Boy Feeding Pecking Rooster\"is as good as any. Produced in 1920 and selling for 89ยข (see MontgomeryWard catalog page below) I wouldn\'t call it \"pre-war\", but more accurately\"post WWI\". The condition is phenomenal; nearmint and it works great. Even without complete winding it ranfor approximately five minutes. The box is the oldest and highest gradeunrestored Japanese toy box I\'ve ever found; it grades EXC+ tonear mint andstill has itsoriginal tissue paper packing. While researching the toy I did find previous examples which sold atChristie\'s, Bertoia\'s, Morphy\'s, and dating back several years. Kitahara alsoshows it in his book \"1000 Robots\". However, my toy up for sale grades higherthan any I could find sold in the past. And none of them had an original box. It\'svery possible that this box may be the only and/or finest exampleknown. The toy is all lithographed tinplate (although one well known sale house called it \"hand painted\'which it is not). As you can see it\'s a brightly multicolored toy, almost \"rainbow-like\". The base is dark green with gold highlights. A pseudo Lehmann trademark was lithoed on each end of the base.It\'s strong clockwork motor causes the rooster bodyto \"peck\" up and down. In response the boy\'s freely hanging arms withfeeding pan rock slightly. It really looks as if he\'s feeding the rooster. The box features a full color applied print on the cover. The originalillustration was done in ink and watercolor. The boy is shown sittingon the edge of a cart feeding the rooster. Two rabbits and severalchicks look on. \"Made In Japan\" and \"Manufactured by Toyodo\" wereincluded as well.Size: 7\" long. Condition: Spectacular near mint, and complete with nothingtouched up or replaced. It has nearly 100% of its original lithography intact. Colors are brilliant and strong throughout. It has only acouple tiny flecks on the center (green area) of either of therooster\'s wings (side). Also has a couple of minute pinpoint nicks onthe boys coat. Rubbing on the lithography is minuscule, sporadic, andvery limited; boy\'s right arm, right edge of the feeding pan, andleft edge of the boy\'s cap brim. Most likely these were caused by thetoy rubbing against the inside of the box. There are no dents, dings, scratches, scuffs, or rust. And again it works great! The single wall cardboard box grades excellent+ to near mint. Both top andbottom sections are complete. It has all of its original corner staplesin place. The cover print is approximately 99% complete with only someslight edge scuffing; above the boy\'s head, the upper right corner, and upperleft edge near the corner. It has only two faint creases; both are onthe upper and lower cover corners (and they\'re really faint). Nocracks. No tears. One of the inside panels on the box bottom has acouple areas of light scuffing due the toy rubbing against it. Somesmall faint penciled numbers are on one end of the bottom. Overall it\'ssolid and square all around. Of course it\'s darkened slightly with age, but this takes nothing away from its elegant appearance. What a fantastic toy and box!
