This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of an early 1920s MODEL ‘AC’ MACK Pulling an Arched-Gooseneck Lowbed Trailer Loaded with an ERIE ‘TYPE B’ Steam Shovel, all 3 units owned by J. & M. DOYLE, General Contractors, Erie, PA.


”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.


DESCRIPTION: A Chain-Drive Hard-Rubber-Tired ‘AC’ MACK dump truck is pulling a Hard-Rubber-Tired lowbed full-trailer with an ERIE Steam Shovel loaded sideways on the trailer, with shovel bucket resting on a pile of dirt in the dump truck. While not an expert on ERIE Shovels, I believe this to be an ERIE ‘Type B” Steam Shovel, wooden cab with boiler stack removed for transport, with operator standing at the controls, while another worker (perhaps the fireman) sits atop the wooden cab to help with low hanging obstacles during transportation. The arched-gooseneck on the lowbed trailer looks very similar to the popular ROGERS lowboys made in nearby Albion, PA. Fastened by rivets, the axle with solid rubber tires under the gooseneck facilitated towing. The AC has gas headlights and side cowl-mounted Adlake lanterns, an open “C Cab”, and a pressurized tank on the rear of the front fender to supply fuel to the headlights and lights on the cowl. This photo has a white border on all 4 sides.


ERIE TYPE B STEAM SHOVEL: Was rated at 3/4-CY for normal digging. The shovel house was made entirely of wood with a corrugated metal roof. The Type B was introduced in 1915, with 3,130 units produced into 1925, when it was replaced with the larger Type B-2. Under ideal conditions, an ERIE could load 2 to 3 3/4-yard dippers per minute. 1923 was claimed to be ‘the big construction boom year’ with 498 Type B produced. More than 4,150 Eries were in service by the end of 1926, far more revolving shovels and cranes than any other manufacturer had produced they claimed. Year after year, Erie was said to make many improvements in their steam Eries, including more power, larger hoisting engines and larger boiler, stronger boom, and heavier/stronger trucks and turntable. But by 1926 steam was on its way out, being replaced by gasoline powered shovel, and the diesel in the 1930s.


MACK “AC”: The famous Mack Model “AC” was the truck that made Mack famous around the world, and was known as the “Bulldog” Mack for its rugged dependability in WWI Europe ... a nickname that stuck and gave rise to the phrase “Tough as a Mack truck”. Some 40,200 “AC” Macks were produced from 1916 to 1938, one of the longest production runs of any model truck. Built with a 4-cylinder gas engine and a 4-speed transmission with chain-drive, the “AC” was well suited for tough construction work. The split side-radiator behind the engine, allowed for a sloping hood design and better driver visibility. A ‘motometer’ usually sat atop the center of the rear mounted radiator, for the driver to monitor engine temperature, manually opening and closing the side radiator louvers to cool or warm the engine. Some of these rugged chain drive AC Macks were used up into the early 1950s ... hard to believe!
