COLLECTOR NOTES—LEICA Ia, Complete Outfit with period dealer plate & FODIS Rangefinder

In an era of considerable financial uncertainty, early and/or rare Leicas—lightweight, portable, readily marketable, and made in limited numbers—are being viewed as premium grade collectibles, with examples reaching $1,130,000 US (840,000 Euros) at the latest Westlicht sale.

As happened with the collector car market 10 years ago, the collectible camera market is extending beyond the traditional photo/enthusiast collector.

Outfit Investment Grade: A(See Key below.)

• Leica collecting is all aboutcondition, originality, and rarity.

• The Leica Ia is fromthe fourth year of production, one of a batch of 80. It appears to be Variant 7 in \"Die 10 Varianten der klassischen Leica IA mit Elmar 1:3,5 F=50mm\"(v. Einem), with a standardized lens.

• Theperiod German dealer plate is rarely seen, and gives thisoutfit a history, individuality and extra value.

Values:

- Collectiblend puts the value of these 5-digit Leicas at $1,900 in good condition.

- An example in B+ condition sold at Westlicht on 11.22.13 for $1,620, and another one in B condition on 5.12.12 for $2,368.

LEICA INVESTMENT GRADE RATINGS

NOTE: This is not a value, condition or rarity rating (like Hove). It is a blend of all three, representing the overall ranking of the desirability of a Leitz camera, lens or accessory, regardless of current market conditions. Condition may move items to the grade below.

  • A Gradeitems always have a following, and bring strong money when offered for sale.

Examples include the “O” & Compur series; 3-digit 1(A)s; Luxus & Calfskins; Anstigmat & Elmax lenses; gray IIIcK bodies, esp. with original lenses; cameras with milestone numbers or proven associations with significant events (the “Hindenberg” Leica); cameras with period dealer, police or other plates; military engravings with good provenance (Wehrmacht, 3 Crowns IIIgs); Leica Reporters; Stereo outfits; some MOOLYs; and low production equipment—e.g. the IIId, 72, M3 1st. type, black Ms. Also Midland-engraved Leitz Canada items. Condition assumed Mint to Mint- except for the very rarest/earliest items.

Will always keep up with the market and may outperform it significantly.

  • B Gradeitems are more common, but still sought after by collectors.

Examples include 4-digit early bodies; non-Standard outfits/lenses; low-production or low-survivor items (e.g Hektor 7.3, Rigid Summars); black prewar bodies; very early flash outfits; the Leica IIIb; Red Curtains, wartime “stepped” Leica IIIcs & gray “civilian” Leica IIIcs; the Leica IIIF DA; the Leica Ig and Leica IIIg; double-wind M3 bodies; and most “Special Event” and LHSA commemorative outfits. Matching lenses a plus. Condition assumed Mint to Mint- except for the rarest/earliest items.

    May see modest appreciation.

  • C Gradeitems have some intrinsic interest, but are relatively common.

Examples include prewar chrome bodies, inc. Leica IIIa; most postwar \"flattop\" Leica IIIc and non-DA IIIf; Elmar, Summar, Summitar and Summicron 5cm lenses; many telephoto lenses and Visoflex outfits; the Leica Ic, If, IIc and IIf; and some conversions of early cameras.

Should follow the market as a whole.

  • D Gradeitems may be quite usable, but at present show limited or no collector interest.

They may also be Grade B or Grade C items in less than Mint- condition, or with non-significant engravings or non-factory modifications (e.g. flash synch). Examples include most Flash outfits/exposure meters, most Leicaflexes, and Leica R and digital bodies and some lenses.

Use and enjoy. Long term investments at height=\"28px\" valign=\"middle\" face=\"arial\" style=\"text-decoration:none\"
