Amazing 1933 Program for Protest Meeting at the Lyric Theatre in Baltimore by the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League. Signed on the cover by the three main speakers- SenatorsWilliamH.King [Utah]; Phillips LeeGoldsborough [Maryland] and Millard Tydings [Maryland] Apparently someone attending theprotest meeting got these three speakers to sign the program. Dim: 6\" x 9\" Has front and back cover [back cover blank] and two inside pages. Cover reads\" Non-Sectarian Protest Meeting Against Persecution of Jews in Germany. [Non Sectarian Anti-Nazi League was a Jewish organization founded in 1933 by Samuel Untermyer advocating an international boycott of Germany. It pushed fora boycott by American businesses of German goods and \"exposed\" those who continued to purchase those goods;favored a boycott of the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1938 Schmeling-Louis heavyweight fight; lobbied to have the United States government investigate pro-Nazi propaganda and \"America -Firsters\"and fed information to Martin Dies and his House Un-American Activities Committee. The boycotts were not very successful mainly because many Jews did not support them. After the War it began to push for civil rights for blacks and also infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. However it failed to have the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem tried at Nuremburg for aiding Hitler in the War. He was chosen as a Republican for Governor of Maryland, serving from 1912-1916, only the state\'s second elected Republican governor. His administration was marked by reforms in education, workman\'s compensation and better roads. He was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican serving from 1929-1935 [time of document] He ran for the gubernatorial nomination in 1934 but lost and Franklin Roosevelt appointed him Director of the Federal Deposit Corporation where he served from 1935-1946. He had been a bank president in the 1920s. Goldsborough was supportive of proJewish legislation and in 1934 led a drive to save the Maryland branches of the Young Men\'s andYoung Women\'s Hebrew Association.] U.S. Senator Millard E. Tydings [see #6 from internet] Millard EvelynTydings(1890-1961) was born in Maryland, was acivil engineer with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and eventually studied law at the University of Maryland. He served in the Army in World War I reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in a machine gun division. He served in the Maryland House of Representatives 1916-1921 and was Speaker in 1920 and was in the Senate 1922-1923. He was chosen as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives serving from 1923-1927 when he was elected to the United States Senate serving from 1927-1951 [time of document] He supported independence for Puerto Rico and the Philippines and nuclear disarmament [1950] However he was also an opponent of the New Deal feeling it was fiscally irresponsible and introduced a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Tydings introduced a resolution in 1934 condemning the Hitler government and it oppression of Jews but it was bottled up in committee. In 1950, he led an investigation of Joseph McCarthy\'s charges ofCommunist influence in the State Department over the \"loss\" of China. His committee denounced McCarthy who in turn worked against his re-election in 1950. Tydings lost. ] Mrs. Wm. Baurenschmidt [Maria Oehl von Hattersheim Bauernschmidt (1875-1962) or \"Mrs. B\" was a Baltimore political commentator who battled local politicos and supported local hospitals andschools. Every election eve from 1927, she announced her candidates and why she supported them.A life-long Democrat she took a fairly independent course and was fearless in attacking powerful men. It was perhaps a bit tense of the dais as Mrs. B had a long standing feud with then Governor Alfred Ritchie [ Democrat Alfred Cabell Ritchie see #9 from internet was Governor of Maryland 1920-1935, tried to run for President in 1932 and refused Roosevelt\'s offer of Vice-President on the Democrat ticket. Mrs. B felt he was too close to political bosses. At least Ritchie was not there, having someone read his message. Master of Ceremonies, Baltimore Mayor Howard W. Jackson (1877-1960) [see#10 for Jackson in 1941 with Duke and Duchess ofWindsor]was Mayor of Baltimore 1921-1927 and 1931-1943 amdwas a personal whipping boy of Mrs. B. [Simon Ernest Sobeloff (1894-1973) see#9 from internet was born in Baltimore and graduated from the Maryland School of Law in 1915. He was assistant city solicitor in Baltimore,1919-1924 and deputy city solicitor, 1927-1931. He was US Attorney for Maryland, 1931-1934 [time of document] and later Baltimore City Solicitor. From 1952-1954, he was Chief of the Maryland Court of Appeals and was appointed United States Solicitor General by President Dwight Eisenhower, serving from 1954-1956 [see photograph #9from internet].
