DESCRIPTION: The BINKLEY COAL CO. at their BOBOLINK MINE near Seelyville, Indiana, about 8 miles from Terre Haute, IN, was using the largest type of coal trucks developed in the world at that time, in 1936. This series of 4 different photos shows the trucks and equipment at 4 different angles. Despite unsatisfactory road conditions at the mine, the 4 WHITES then in regular daily service made the 2-mile round trip from the loading shovel to the tipple, including loading and unloading in 15 minutes flat. A 2-page illustrated photo copy of an article from POWER WAGON magazine, March 1936, will be included with each series of photos mailed to you.

HISTORY OF 1936 WHITE MODEL 691-SD-420 TRACTOR and AUSTIN-WESTERN BOTTOM DUMP SEMI-TRAILER: The 691-SD-420 WHITE rated at 25-30 tons, was a 6-wheel 4-wheel drive tractor, powered by a White-built 580-cid Model 5A 6-Cylinder gasoline engine developing 140-hp. The left side of the White cab was angled, not square, to be able to make tight turns. The AUSTIN-WESTERN Bottom Dump Semi-Trailers, also said to be the largest coal trailers in the world at that time, were built by The Austin-Western Road Machinery Company, in Aurora, IL. Each tractor-trailer complete weighed 40,000-lbs, was 40’ long, 104” wide, and 101” high, holding 33-CY plus of coal.

THE BOBOLINK STRIP COAL MINE: All coal loading of the giant White-Austin Western units was handled by a fast moving BUCYRUS-ERIE loading shovel with a 5-CY dipper. The Tipple at this mine, crushed, cleaned, graded, and dumped the processed coal into railroad cars on 5-tracks at 300 tons per hour. All coal produced at the mine was shipped by railroad coal cars.

BUCYRUS-ERIE MODEL 950-B STRIPPING SHOVEL: was introduced in 1935 with a host of innovations, and was said to be the world’s largest stripping shovel at the time, capable of moving from 2,000 to 3,000-CY of earth per hour. The material dug could be dumped a distance of 215’ from the point it was dug, almost a city block. Each stripped pile could be piled about 70’ high. Not only did its 30-CY all-welded, alloy steel Dipper break the size record, it also has many features that remained in Bucyrus-Erie design for many many years. Most notable was the front-end arrangement with a singular tubular dipper handle operated by wire ropes and a 2-part boom pinned at its center and tied to the gantry with 2-heavy beams. The tubular handle allowed the dipper to rotate and alleviate stresses on the handle and the boom. A propel motor in each of the 4-crawler assemblies eliminated the previously complicated system of multiple gear trains, shafts, and chains. Electrically powered, this shovel weighed more than 2,000,000-lbs. and was 14-stories tall. Carrying a 30-CY dipper, this shovel could dig to a height of almost 100’ high. Thirty GE Electric Motors developed a total of over 2500-hp. The Shovel was operated by 2 men, crawled on 4-independently-driven caterpillar-type crawlers, and was steered hydraulically.
