Greetings! For your consideration I offer this vintage trumpet in B-flat, marked \"C.G. CONN LTD. / ELKHART / IND. U.S.A.\" on the bell. This is the model 48B \"Vocabell Connqueror.\" Serial number 317196, stamped on the 2nd valve casing, indicates production around 1937, according to published serial number lists. Bore measures to precisely .456\" (ML bore) on my dial caliper, although it is nominally quoted as Conn\'s #1-1/2 Bore, .458\". Construction is yellow brass throughout. The lacquer finish is about 50%; it appears to be original, but I\'m not certain. This horn has the famous rimless bell that was tested to add several decibels to the volume, and which enhanced response.

WHAT CONN SAID IN 1962: \"The Vocabell is more than bell without a wire in the rim. It is a solid metal bell in which the thickness of the bell bottom is scientifically graduated to permit maximum vibration in sympathy with the vibrating tone column in the instrument. Delicate harmonics dampened out or muffled by the bell with a wire in the rim sound full, pure and free on this new principle bell, enriching and strengthening the tone. Columbia Broadcasting System Studios in New York made tests on the Vocabell and showed it has from 12 to 15 decibels greater power with the same amount of effort than conventional bells.\"

CONDITION: This instrument has suffered from wear and tear over the years. The (original?) lacquer finish is worn about 50% with the remaining spotty and weak. The original mouthpipe suffered from internal corrosion, with the internal mouthpipe tube coming loose at the receiver end, so that it rattles and causes severe playing problems. (I believe that a skilled repairman could fix this, but it would require removing the receiver, centering and resoldering the small end of the mouthpipe inside the \"armored\" exterior pipe, then resoldering the receiver in place.) Therefore, the mouthpipe was replaced with a functional mouthpipe from a similar Conn 40B \"long model\" Connqueror; this mouthpipe is a bit too long for a 48B and makes the horn play somewhat flat. I am including the original 48B mouthpipe so you can take a stab at fixing it. The valve buttons are from a different Conn model, probably a 22B, and are not correct for this model, but they are functional. \"Clickless Crysteel\" valves have a significant amount of blow-by and side-play. You are buying it \"as is\".

ACCESSORIES: Original 48B mouthpipe; Shabby, funky-smelling non-original case which is suitable for shipping. No mouthpiece. If you don\'t want the case, let me know and it will save you a little bit on the shipping cost. You get exactly what is shown; see pictures.

PLAYING QUALITIES: This horn plays OK, but not nearly as well as a pristine example. The feel is a bit uncentered due to the valve wear. I think this horn would be best suited as a donor horn to restore an example with better valves, although you could try to restore it.
