1948 AUTOCAR OILFIELD TRUCK 8x10 B&W PHOTO, RICHMOND EXPLORATION (CHEVRON) CALIF
Price: US $9.99

This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of a 1948 AUTOCAR MODEL DC10064N OILFIELD TRUCK with BRADEN Winch owned by Richmond Exploration Co, subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California (CHEVRON). The original photo was an original Autocar factory photo, dated July 1, 1948. This unusual photo shows the heavy duty Braden winch and operators platform, mounted on an Autocar truck behind the cab, as the truck was being assembled as an oilfield bed truck.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.

DESCRIPTION: My original 1948 photo from Autocar, has the following typed information on the back side: “Model DC-10064-N, 187” wheelbase Autocar Diesel. Equipment: DeLuxe Cab by Autocar, 11.00/20 tires, chassis to be used for general oil field work, Braden Model M50-20B Winch to be used in both erecting oil field equipment and later swabbing out wells. Owner: Richmond Exploration Company, subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California (Petroleum) 225 Bush St., San Francisco, Cal. Information supplied by San Francisco Branch, July 12, 1948.”

STANDARD OIL OF CALIFORNIA/now CHEVRON CORPORATION: Standard Oil Company (California) or California Standard has a rich history, particularly in the early California oilfields. Star Oil, one of Chevron’s early predecessors, discovered oil in the Pico Canyon in 1876. Standard Oil had set up operations in Richmond in 1901, including what is now the Chevron Richmond Refinery and tank farm, which is still operated by Chevron. In 1911, Standard Oil Co. (California) was severed from its parent corporation, Standard Oil, as a result of the federal government’s successful lawsuit against Standard Oil. It went on to become part of the “Seven Sisters” which dominated the world oil industry in the early 20th century. Going through several name changes, SoCal changed its name to Chevron Corporation in 2013, since it had been using the well-known “Chevron” retail brand name for decades.

With one of the Standard Oil Co. (California) early refineries located in Richmond, I imagine the owner of this Autocar, RICHMOND EXPLORATION CO. played an active part of the huge California oilfields. In 1903 California became the leading oil-producing state in the USA, trading the number one position back and forth with Oklahoma through 1930. As of 2012, California was still the nation’s third most prolific oil-producing state.
