DESCRIPTION: This Autocar company promotional photo was taken in the late 1950s, perhaps about the time the 138-mile Massachusetts Turnpike was opened in 1957. This tandem Autocar on a 157’ wheelbase, was powered with a 375-hp diesel and 10-speed transmission. This Autocar and Turnpike Doubles, from the Allston, Mass terminal in Boston, was featured in Transport Topics magazine. The Massachusetts Turnpike eventually became the eastern most section of I-90, connecting upstate New York to Boston. An interesting fact is that the Mass Pike at its highest point in the Berkshire Hills, it reaches an elevation of 1724’, the highest point on I-90 east of South Dakota.

AUTOCAR DCU: The short hood DCU had some unique features … the engine was tilted 10º, and the cab height from the top of the frame to the roof was 5” lower than the standard cab. The primary purpose of the DCU construction was to provide shorter over-all length - 106” BBC. The DCU in this photo had a short 157” wheelbase.

INLAND EXPRESS INC.: Started in Syracuse, NY in 1949, with 1947 & 1948 White tractors, along with 3 1947 Brockways and 5 used 28’ Fruehauf trailers. Inland began double operations as early as 1958, and continually ran double 40’ and later 45’ trailers on the New York Thruway and Massachusetts Turnpike between Boston and Buffalo. They operated 10 terminals in NY, MA, and ME, and also interchanged in Ontario, Canada with Intercity Truck Lines and Dominion Truck Lines. They ran great looking Autocars in the late 1950s, some B-67 Macks in the 1960s, and Freightliners and a few Diamond Reos in the 1970s. Company colors were yellow and grey. During the 1960s, Inland operated the largest fleet of Kentucky trailers east of the Mississippi. By 1969 Inland was operating 125 tractors, 184 trailers, and 48 city trucks …. becoming the prime motor carrier between New England and upstate New York. In 1980 Inland was bought out by Schuster Express of Colchester, CT, before being sold to Pilot Freight Carriers.
