1963 Remco B/O Mike Mercury Supercar Beauty With Box
Price: US $445.00
We’re back! After a seven year lapse and a relocation of 2000 miles, we’ve once again begun offering some of the finest goodies available. As an participant since 1998, hopefully you will remember us formerly as the OCR Center, selling the best toys and memorabilia in our store, at shows and also through . You can offer with confidence in our abilities, procedures and integrity. To start off again, we excitedly present what possibly might be one of the best items we have ever offered:

Broadcast from January 1961 until April 1962, Gerry Anderson produced 39 episodes of “Supercar”, a “supermarionation” TV show for ITC. Pivotal in all the episodes was the flying Supercar, a futuristic hovercraft that also had jet engines and rocket propulsion. The Remco toy company issued a wonderful battery operated toy replica of Supercar in 1963. We are pleased to offer herein a terrific example of this toy, including the dramatic retail box.

This plastic car was available in two distinct packagings: a solid, unillustrated corrugated box when sold as a mail-order purchase, or inside a wonderful retail package where the toy sits on an illustrated plinth beneath a clear bubble. Clearly, this retail package has much better visual appeal and is the version we offer for sale.

In magnificent condition, the Remco Supercar in this sale is remarkably bright and mostly free of soiling. The car, plynth and bubble are all original. Powered by a single “D” sized battery (NOT included) our Supercar STILL RUNS! As expected, it is probably not as speedy as it was when new, but these toys are seldom found still operational. This toy ran in a variety of patterns, guided by four dual sided steering discs that were inserted inside a well beneath a removable panel that spanned across both of the rear fins. Three of the four control discs here are original. As one disc was missing – “Path No. 1”/”Path No. 2” - we obtained a replica of that disc, made from an original. The only difference of note to that disc is its slightly bolder coloration. We must also note that the printed instruction sheet is also missing.

However, the vehicle is just as you would want. That fragile on/off switch is perfect, as are the insides of the battery box and the control disc nacelle. In fact, the original rubber bands that retract the rubber tipped pivot rod and control disc reader are still visible inside that control area! All the decals are present and unaffected by age. It truly looks as if this toy was never used. We put some rubber renewer on the traction bands around the drive wheels and that pivot tip. If we didn’t state that when we got the toy the thin tip of the right wing was cleanly snapped off, you would not notice it. The tip has been reinstalled using an industrial plastic solvent so that the damage is all but invisible. With the Mike Mercury figure still in place, with a beautiful windscreen and uniform coloration all over, we would grade the car, alone, as an investment piece, NM- or C8.5 on a 1-10 scale, due to the repaired damage.

Essentially an upside down open box, the plinth base was made from corrugated cardboard with metal corner braces to ensure the toy would be safely protected from corner breakage. Now over fifty years old, there is some age tanning to the white paper top surface of the plinth. We also see a few pushes to the bottom edge and also around the die-cut opening where the car sits. Possibly the worst aspect of this item is that the shaped bubble top has several cracks. The worst of these are two splits, one about 5” long and the other at 2.5” long, alongside one of the corner bubbles over the discs. At some point, clear tape was put on these cracks to secure them. There are a few edge cracks as well around the lip of the lid and some scuffs and abrasions are seen scattered over the bubble. When all is put together as originally issued by the factory, one can turn the lid so that the cracks are toward the rear, to minimize their impact. Lastly, whatever type of anchor plugs Remco used to hold the bubble in position on the plinth are not present. Grading just the two packaging pieces, the base and the lid, we assign a grade of C6.

A seldom seen, near complete Supercar in this overall condition will make a dramatic focal point in any collection. Taken together, then, we grade the overall item as a solid C7, downgraded mostly because of the clear bubble condition. However, it is a small miracle that so fragile a component survived at all. Be sure to view all 22 of the pictures we have included for this listing. The digital anti-piracy watermark legend across each of our photos protects your investment, as well as the time and effort we have put into creating these high definition, unique images. This watermark is not present on the items, of course.
