This listing is a late 19th century French bronze figuralsculpture of a young girl reading by Mathurin Moreau. The figure is mounted on a turned rougemarble base, it measures as a whole 24 ¾ inches or 63 cm high, and is 7 ¾inches or 19.5 cm at its widest.
The bronze features a young girl waking and reading abook. She carries a small basket on herarm and her dress is blowing in the breeze.The bronze has a dark chocolate brown patina or color which is alloriginal to the piece. The bronze ismounted on a round stepped rouge marble base.The base of the bronze is signed “MOREAU. MATH. HORS CONCOURS”, alongwith a medallion above it that reads “MEDALLE D’HONNEUR”. Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was a Frenchsculptor and son of Jean Baptiste Moreau.He studied a the Ecole des Beaux Arts and exhibited at the Salon from1848 onwards and received numerous awards.His bronzes include numerous classical and allegorical figures andgroups. The figure is in very good condition with minor ageappropriate variations to the patina.There is a small chip in the marble to the back bottom rim and a smalldent to the bottom bronze rim by the chip, please see photos. Again, this is in the back of the statuebase and does not affect how the bronze stands.
