How does it work?
Afterrunning the installation software from the included CD, plug the USBcable in to your computer, and aim the receiver in the direction of thenetwork to which you wish to connect. Then scan for networks and pickout the desired network and connect to it. With it's built in 16 footUSB cable. It is easy to put this device near a window or anotherplace further away from your computer for optimal reception
Where does it work?
Thiscan be used indoors near a window, or placed outdoors for optimalreception. It includes a detachable stand that also doubles as a wallmount. A mounting ring and screws are included. The back of the casehas special water sealant for weather resistance. This requires you be in range of an accessible hotspot- either an open working one such as at an RV park, or one to which you know the password such as your home network. This is not a 3G/4G cellular device that can pick up Internet anywhere, nor is there any monthly fee to use this. This device does not crack or hack password protected networks. It is designed to boost the WiFi range of your Microsoft Windows PC beyond what your internal WiFi card can reach. No internal WiFi in your PC? No problem, this booster will serve as your PCs WiFi card.
How far can it pickup?
Resultsmay vary based on environment. Typically this can pick up from about2-4 times the distance of stock Wi-Fi cards inside today's laptops,making ideal for picking up signals from detached buildings on aproperty, or access points on the other side of an RV park orcampground. The increase will be further when it can be placed higherup outdoors free from immediate obstacles.
I've seen similar-sized productsonline advertising 50 or even 80 dBi gain integrated antennas. Why isyours only 10 dBi?
Gaininflation is rampant online especially from products shipping directfrom Hong Kong or China. Because there is no easy way to independentlyverify antenna gain, some sellers will inflate the gain number to maketheir product seem superior. At Rokland we advertise the true gain ofthe antenna. If you see a product with similar dimensions to ours,(4inches by 8 inches not including stand), the gain is going to besimilar. For larger items you may find a 16 or 18 dBi gain antenna, butnumbers 24 dBi and above would generally require the antenna to beseveral feet wide or larger. For example, we sell a 24 dBi grid antennafrom Alfa Networks which is 3 feet by 2 feet. You won't find a 50 dBigain Wi-Fi antenna on a product less than a foot wide.
Compatibility: This is compatible with computers using Microsoft WindowsXP, Vista,Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10 using the included CD. For Mac 10.5 through 10.9 use, thesoftware is not included- please email us for a separate download link. More Mac it is not compatible with newer 10.10 or 10.11, 10.12.For Linux, this is plug and play with some newer versions likeBacktrack 5, but for other distros drivers may need to be downloadedand installed. At this time we can provide technical support forWindowsXP, Vista, and 7/8/10. We are not able to provide supportforLinux, and can only provide limited support for Mac use.
Directional vs. Omni directionalantennas:This product has an integrated directional antenna. Directionalantennas concentrate gain ina particular direction. This helps improve reception in that directionand also reduces noise (band interference) coming from otherdirections. Though reception will be better in that direction, thetotal number of networks will be lesser than when using anomni-directional antenna of the same gain in the same location. Omni-directionalantennas can detect signals from multipledirections because gain in concentrated in a 360 degree horizontalpattern. They work best when you are mobile and do not knowwhere signals are originating. Directional antennas can be rotated tofind the optimal placement.
