The battle of Manila Bay was the first major engagement of the Spanish American War. The Isla de Luzon was hit three times by the US Navydisabling one of her guns and injuring six crew men. She was scuttled in shallow water to avoid capture. After she sank, her upper works remained above water and was set on fire from a team from a US gunboat. After the United State occupied the Philippines The US Navy seized, salvaged, repaired her and commissioned her as gunboat USS Isla de Luzon in 1900 for service the the United States.
This shell is engraved: From the Spanish Gunboat Isla De Luzon sunk in Manila Bay May 1st 1898. I am not sure if this shell came from the gunboat during it\'s service in the Spanish American War or for it\'s service in the US Navy in 1900,up until WWI. She was finallydecommissioned 15February 1919.The shell is inert, has some damage and rust as shown in the photos. The casing looks to be made from brass and has a one inch crack to one side. There are marking to the bottom of the casing which I can not make out. The shell measure 6 3/8\" in length, 1 3/4\" at base. Projectile measures 2 3/4\", appears to be made from iron and has a 1\" brass or copper band wrapped around it. Theprojectile fitsloosely inside the casing.Weight is approx. 1.5 lbs prior to packaging. Sold as found from a vintage estate in Maryland. Please review all photos and ask all questions prior to placing a offer. I am not an expert in this field and willanswerall questions to the best of my abilities.Truly a remarkable piece and a greatopportunity to own a rare example of antique maritime history.
