VINTAGE Windows 98 SE TRUE DOS DELUXE Gaming Computer PC - Packard Bell Legend
Price: US $1199.99
An awesome classic here for some good old DOS gaming on a real original system! Lots of work has gone in to fixing this machine up and restoring it to it\'s former glory and then some. You aren\'t just buying and old system here that is full of rust & dust, this one has been meticulously cleaned, repaired, customized, and is ready to rock.Customized original Packard Bell Legend - Model 822CDT. The end result, a genuine ISA based system capable of playing a wide range of old games, including many TRUE DOS mode games!!! Also has already been configured with a handy menu for DOS mode to help load various memory modes & CD / Mouse drivers much easier. (Has DOS mode sound drivers installed!) Sound card is an Aztech Sound Galaxy 16 that sounds great in both Windows and in DOS!Tested to play Doom, Hexxen, Heretic, Duke Nukem, and Wolfenstein in DOS mode and all worked fantastic. (All but Doom actually seemed to play perfectly right from within Windows too.)The case is a good size heavy duty metal construction Mid/Standard size tower. There is some expansion potential, and the floppy cable has the necessary connector for a 5 1/4 drive if you wanted to add one. Also room for various expansion cards (just be aware that resources can be very tricky on an old system like this.) One more modification that I could make would be to glue a new fan to the processor heat sink if desired, but I did not do so in the spirit of the system being so close to original still.A lot of time went in to cleaning all of the various components, it has been nearly completely disassembled and cleaned, including the whole case, and inside the floppy & optical drives. The optical drive is not original, it is a nice newer one with ball bearings. CMOS battery replaced & contacts cleaned. (The only real damage I noted anywhere was one of the memory slots, it has 4 total, and they were actually all populated and working, but there is a small bit of damage on a couple of the pins of one of the slots so it is set up with only the other 2 slots used with 32 MB of memory, which is really more than enough for this machine anyway and twice the amount it originally had.) Everything else inside looked great, no signs of any worries, all the caps look great, no bulging, likely to run for a long time still. Also hardly any signs of rust at all anywhere inside, rare for a machine of this age. A few scratches and such here and there on the case as to be expected of a system of this age but quite good overall really. A great deal of time from cleaning, prepping & testing the hardware forward went into figuring out how to get everything working and all of the settings, and then getting 98 fully set up, but have to say I\'m very happy with the end results. This is an amazing system, and very rare. I loved these old Packard Bell machines as a kid and I still love them now, great old systems that were built incredibly well.It is in great condition overall, everything cleaned and tested thoroughly to be working. Windows 98SE installed and fully patched. Drivers used are on 2nd partition. And Direct X 9.0c.Intel Pentium processor running at 100 Mhz. Also has 1x serial, parallel, 2x PS2 (for mouse and keyboard), video & audio connections plus gameport.Optical drive is a very good old model with ball bearing drive. Also disassembled and cleaned, reads even some burned cds well. (Which not all very old drives do. Fresh high quality disks like Sony or Verbatim CD-R non re-writable work best.) Eject works very good still as well. Please be aware that CD drives on some of these very old models can be tricky. It seemed to work best if you put the disk in after Windows is fully loaded. Used to think that the CD drive was the issue with our original Packard Bell 75mhz long ago, but after putting four different drives into this one, I realize its just how they work. If it doesn\'t seem to read the disk at first, remove it, close the drive, wait a bit, and then reinsert it again, worked for me the few times it seemed to want to give me any trouble. (Would say drive not ready.)Floppy works great. Had zero problems. Tested to format, boot, etc. It has been disassembled & cleaned. Due to unstable nature of floppies & floppy disks however, I cannot also guarantee it will work flawlessly for you. Intel Motherboard with expansion daughterboardCirrus Logic 5435 1MB Integrated VideoAztech I38-MMSN834 - Sound Galaxy Washington 16 Sound Card installed! DOS mode drivers also installed! Achieves TRUE DOS sound functionality. (Also works well in Windows 98 of course. Many games can be played directly within Windows, for the ones that cannot, you\'ll have a very high chance of sound for a wide range of games with the real DOS mode drivers also installed on an ISA type card, plus the helpful menu for various memory modes.) This card is Soundblaster 2.0 compatible, and actually has a full OPL3 core for fantastic sound quality, and does not suffer from any MIDI hang issues that the original Soundblaster 16 does, really a fantastic sound card. 32MB EDO memory 2.1gb Seagate Medalist ST32122A IDE hard drive (fully tested in hdtune, no bad sectors.) (Very reliable high quality drive.)Multiple ISA & PCI slots open
Really nice system, running exceptionally well with no problems & all fans running good. This setup with the ISA Soundblaster 2.0 compatible Aztech card along with Windows 98 SE has a ton of potential for playing a wide variety of older games right from within Windows 98 or from DOS mode with a helpful menu for various memory modes and DOS sound drivers already installed as well. For an authentic experience and system it doesn\'t get much better than this. It can\'t play everything, but it can play A LOT without having to do much. Do not however buy one of my systems and then ask to return because of it not being able to use or run a particular program or game, or not being able to set it up properly. (Or because you monkeyed with settings or hardware and messed it up!) Thank you.****Also please note that surface rust can occasionally occur on older computers and may or may not be present, but you can be assured if present it would only cosmetic and would not affect operation. I would never sell a system that was so badly rusted it may not work properly, not even close and anything other than light cosmetic surface rust would be noted in description.
