My experience with Apple began over 35 years ago in 1980. It initially started with Apple ][ or // products…. then Pluses, IIes, IIcs and continued with Apple IIGS’s, and extended to Mac’s of course.
As an early adopter I became one the ‘go to guys’ for tech support at my High School, and eventually supported a lab of 35 Apples in my classroom. Yes I was one of those guys entering and debugging Basic programs found in Byte magazine using a balky cassette drive.
Over the years I have bought, traded, repaired and sold thousands of early Apple Computers. Because of my widely known interest, I was often tapped to buy existing stock and inventory when mid Pennsylvania schools sold off their surplus inventory.
And now I have finally had the time to sort, organize, inventory and test the incredible quantity of vintage Apple PCs, hardware, accessories and software, and will be posting and selling on those items that are surplus to my needs or interests. I guarantee 4 things that if you watch my listings: 1) exceptionally attractive and clean examples, 2) unusual and hard to find items, 3) tested and 100% functional items, and 4) items with very specific and detailed information, and clear accurate pictures with all of the information you need to make an informed offer. After buying vintage Apple items for over 30 years, I know what buyers need and want to know to make an intelligent offer based upon assessed value.
Additionally I know what constitutes vintage Apple value. For example…almost every seller that posts a ‘Woz’ GS for sale labels it ‘rare’, when over 50,000 were produced. So if you are patient, a ‘Woz’ while desirable, is NOT rare. What most sellers do not know, is that early Apple plastics over time yellowed when exposed to light. What makes a Woz or any early Apple more valuable, is if it retains its original ‘as sold color’, is NOT yellowed, and is NOT defaced with engraving and marks. With other sellers you will have to guess….with my listings you will see the item you are considering, pictured ALL sides with clear images, with notes and comments on appearance, and hooked up and displayed working with screen shots. So a ‘Woz’ in like new crisp and attractive gray….not yellow or tan…is much harder to obtain. And…because I have a huge stock of 5 ¼” and 3 ½” drives, keyboards, mice etc….I can prepare and ship a system which is carefully color matched and very attractive. Or I can carefully color match components you may wish to purchase to add to your existing system. I get it, understand and respect the entire concept of matching colors due to fading, when most other sellers are clueless.
When sold NEW….Apple II items were a very light tan…while IIe’s and IIGS’s were a platinum or very light gray. One of the slides or images I will happily post or send you….is a color image of new platinum through a range of darker tans caused by exposure to light with age. This is the image I use when a customer says I need two drives, or a keyboard, mouse etc…. and I ask them to assess the color that would best match their current PC or device.
Bonus question one….which side of an Apple PC used in a school faded or discolored most and why? Answer…the back…which was usually positioned towards the window where direct sunlight struck and discolored the rear severely.
Knowing that fading and discoloration does occur…in my listings you will see a white box. So that when I am listing a pristine ‘Woz’ which is as close to the color it was sold new….you can judge accurately. Additionally, when I get good items that are badly discolored, I harvest them for their motherboards, accessory cards and power supplies, and discard the badly faded and discolored external case. Why should a buyer pay to ship something they will throw away any way?
