You are viewing a fine old Native American woven basket from the Yurok Tribe of the North West coast of California. From the fine weaving and the color of the basket, I would estimate that it was made between 1880 and 1920. The basket has a bold zig-zag pattern woven throughout the body, and the base of the basket is woven with a different color grass in a circular weave, presumably for strength. I believe this was used in cooking. The basket measures approximately 4 3/4 inches tall and is 7 inches varying in diameter. It is in excellent condition considering it is most likely over 100 years old. No holes or major breaks. Minor wear visible only. Dust and dirt accumulated over the years! The straw has developed a rich honey-color oxidation over time which is another indication of its age. Please feel free to email us with any questions you might have.
