The experts\' consensus on this knife is that it is not an actual Confederate period piece, but was made some years later in the style of a Confederate knife. This knife featuresa carbon steel blade,and bonehandle scales.Blade length is 7-3/4\". Overall lengthis 12-1/2\". The blade is tang stampedA. H. DeWitt 1862 on one side, andC.S. Columbus GAon the other side. A. H. DeWitt was a silversmith who worked in Columbus, Georgia from about 1845 to 1860. DeWitt had a contract to make military swords for the State of Georgia around the time of the Civil War. It is not known whether Dewitt made Bowie Knives. Since this knife was probablymade well after the Civil War, the actual maker is unknown. The knife is infaircondition overall, showing signs of occasional use and carry, as well as some rusting and pitting. There is a small chip in one of the handle scales.
