AMERICAN FLYER / GILBERT HO SCALE # 5318 HUDSON & 3 DIE CAST FREIGHT CARS
Price: US $50.00
Up for sale is an American Flyer / Gilbert HO scale # 5318 New York Central 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive and tender, MDT refrigerator car, LNE gondola and caboose. I have rated these items are restoration required, mostly because of the condition of the locomotive. Starting with the loco, it is dirty, has a significant number of chips in its black painted finish, is missing its lead and trailing trucks, has a home made drawbar, is missing various rods and main crankpin bolts and the right front marker light is broken off of the casting. Still, there is actually an up side. These early Hudsons were AC powered although you can certainly run them on DC, but the result is a loco that "under the hood" is very different from the Gilbert Hudsons most folks know. Since it is AC powered, like Lionel and American Flyer O and S gauge locos, this loco has a mechanical three position reversing unit located in the tender. So this loco has a forward, neutral and reverse sequence like other AC powered locos of the era. Even though the piece looks awful the reversing unit cycles correctly and reliably! Additionally, the motor with a field wound armature and series of gears that allow the drivers to turn without power much like Lionel locos, also runs very well in both directions. So I can safely say that it has a good reversing unit, solid motor and drive train and good drivers. At this point I should also note these early Hudsons did not have a smoke unit or chugging function. Likewise, the tender, beyond having a good reversing unit, has a good casting with weak lettering, good trucks and a working American Flyer die cast coupler. The die cast cars are in matching cosmetic condition. The MDT reefer has lost most of its lettering. The Lehigh & New England gondola is probably the best car of the three. The finish is ok and the lettering and L&NE decals on each side of the car are in good condition. The caboose has lost its lettering and has a bend in the corner on one end of the roof. I took a close-up photo of the bottom of the caboose because three of the four truck side frames appear to have been re-attached with epoxy glue. Like the loco, all of the die cast bodies on the cars are in good condition with no signs of deterioration. The trucks on the reefer and gondola are in good condition and the early American Flyer die cast couplers are good on all three pieces of rolling stock. In closing I would say that this sale offers a Gilbert HO collector a nice winter project. Thanks for looking and good luck offerding!
