An ancient Chinese Han Dynasty green glazedfigure of a farmer, dating to between 206 BC – 220 AD.
A rustic, somewhat abstract depiction, the farmer is shown seated, his arms held up to the waist, the loose folds of his robes falling loosely about him. The features are reduced to the essence of form.This figure would have fitted into a large farm scene, agricultural scenes such as this are a known type of terracotta art from the Han dynasty and are a very visual representation of the hopes of the original owner to take his present life into the next.The subjects of Han sculpture encompass virtually every aspect of life and provide visual documents of the nature of Han civilization. The agricultural character of this period\'s economy is wellindicated by the popularity of these model farm structures.
