An ancient Chinese Han Dynasty grey pottery miniature vase, dating to 206 BC – 220 AD.

Formed of grey-red terracotta, the globular body sitting upon a flat base, rising into a flaring neck and with dual loop handles.

This attractive piece is a beautiful illustration of the composed elegance one often encounters in Han Dynasty wares; with a pleasing form, the body is spartan yet graceful. Indeed it might be taken as an allegory of the Han Dynasty itself, a society with a shining veneer of class and refinement that existed against a backdrop of conservative social cohesion. So it is with this vessel; beauty, grace and restraint in equal measure.

These elegant artefacts were used as storage vessels for wine and other liquids, and were ultimately intended for use in the afterlife as a show of wealth and status.
