A rare andwell preservedancient Chinese WesternHan dynasty cocoon jar, dating to 206 - 100 BC.
With the calm elegance that typifiesHan dynastyvessels, the bold silhouette and flowing curves communicate both power and grace in equal measure. The cocoon jar is of classic distinctive form, with pedestal base, wide voluminous body, short neck and thick everted and faceted rim. The body adorned with simple but powerful pattering, a series of incised triple bands running smoothly down the surface of the vessel.
These elegant vases were used as storage vessels for wine and other liquids, and were ultimately intended for use in the afterlife as a show of wealth and status.

Condition: Very good,restored across the centre, minor chips to base and rim, otherwise excellent for an ancient vessel of this size and age.
Provenance:
This piece is from a large number of mostly Chinese antiques, purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum & Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Scans of the exhibition flyer, obtained from the previous owner, can be supplied to the buyer upon request.
