A fine ancient Chinese Han dynasty terracotta horse, dating to 206 BC – 220 AD.
Standing proudly, the broad horse stares confidently forward, with ears raised and back gracefully arched. The body is thickset and somewhat elongated, the docked tail is slightly raised in a show of controlled vigour.
The bold contours of the horse are typical of Han styles, the simplified outline of the body has been reduced to a formalised abstraction, recalling the shape of animal bronzes from archaic China. The power of the horse is not emphasised through distinct detailing of the body, but rather through the sweeping authority of the silhouette.
A beautifully refined and decorative example.

Condition:Excellent for a genuine Han horse and rider. Tail and back right leg reattached with possible further minor restorations. Some pigment preservation, as shown.

Formerly in the collection of Mr. M. O\'Hara (the full name and an image of an oil painting of Mr. O\'Hara will be provided to the new purchaser upon request).
Mr. O\'Hara was a prominent numismatist, author and collector who in later life developed a passion for Chinese terracotta art of the Han - Song period. He sought only the finest examples of their type, buying at a time in the late 1980s when examples without widespread deceptive restorations could still be acquired. ArtAncient purchased the entire collection directly from his heirs and is now honoured to present these items to the market after nearly 35 years.
