Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty Terracotta Pottery Figure of a Boar / Pig - 206 BC
Price: GB $360.00

A striking ancient Chinese Han Dynasty grey terracotta figure of a pig / boar, dating to 206 BC - 220 AD.

The boar is robustly modelled, with a stocky physique, wide snout and ears drooping down over the eyes. Despite its abstraction one can really feel a sense of character about the animal, the image is totally relatable to the viewer.

This charming depiction once formed part of the prominent O’Hara collection and remains a fine example of ancient Chinese abstract art.

From ancient times, the Chinese believed that life after death was similar to life in this world. Therefore, they provided in their tombs the things they would require to maintain the status and style to which they were accustomed. The inclusion of animal miniatures within such contexts bear witness to the importance of raising livestock in ancient China. Xunzi, a follower of Confucius wrote that:

\"one adorns the dead as though they were still living, and sends them to the grave with forms symbolic of life.\"

Length: 5 1/2 inches.

Condition: Excellent condition, unrestored.

Provenance:

Formerly in the collection of Mr. M. O\'Hara (the full name and a picture of Mr. O\'Hara will be provided to the new purchaser upon request).

Mr. O\'Hara was a prominent numismatist, author and collector who in later life developed a passion for Chinese terracotta art of the Han - Song period. He sought only the finest examples of their type, buying at a time in the late 1980s when examples without widespread deceptive restorations could still be acquired. ArtAncient purchased the entire collection directly from his heirs and is now honoured to present these items to the market after nearly 35 years.
