Pottery with painted decoration is among the most remarkable of the archaeological remains from Neolithic cultures that flourished along the banks of the Yellow River. Interesting painted abstract designs symbolize possibly river waves or mountains. Scholars are still trying to analyze these early, mainly agricultural cultures.Banshan was a phase of the Chinese Neolithic Yangshao culture, circa 2600 BC to 2300 BC. The Banshan site is in Guanghe County, Gansu. In 1923 and 1924, Swedish scholar J. G. Anderson discovered the sites of Banshan, Majiayao, Machang, Qijia and Xindian at Lajia on the north bank of the Yellow River
No repairs, paint all original. Thinly potted, with beautiful, burnished surface with only a couple of small chips (see photos). Measures 12\" tall x 11\" wide across the handles.
