antique 1910 French ART NOUVEAU / DECO FLAMBE DRIP GLAZE VASE 2 HANDLED sgd CJE
Price: US $20.51
Offered is an antique, circa 1910 - 1930 FRENCH ARTS & CRAFTS ART DECO TWO-HANDLED POTTERY GRES FLAMME DRIP GLAZE VASE. This flambé glazed vase is hand SIGNED in black on the base with conjoined initials “CJE”, numbers “147/61981”, “FRANCE” and incised number “391”. The glaze is a beautiful terracotta red interrupted by deep Prussian blue drips with forest green halos coming from the top rim. I’ve been unable to find name the artist whose initials are CJE. Perhaps the initials were actually in a different order, like CEJ or GE? If any of you experts know, please email me and I’ll post the information. In any case, the work is definitely from the period and in the style of Gilbert Metenier, Jean Pointu, Adrien Dalpayrat, Alexandre Bigot and/or August Delaherche.
This vase measures 5 ¼” high x 5 ¼” from handle to handle. It is in excellent old condition except for a shallow flake on the rim which has been filled in and enameled (see barely discernable rim area in photo). Also, there is some green paint on just parts of the base (not at all on rest of vase). This paint can surely be completely removed, but I will leave that decision to you. Otherwise, there are no chips or cracks. An outstanding example of European art pottery just after the turn of the century 1900!
