Antique 1936 Philco 116 116X 11 Tube High Fidelity Console Radio -- DECO WORKING
Price: US $305.00
You are offerding on a very Deco 1935/36 Philco model 116X \"High Fidelity\" tube radio in working condition.Philco was originally called the \"Philadelphia Storage Battery Company,\" and they got their start building wet-cell batteries for electric cars. By the 1920\'s they were building that new invention \"radio.\" During the 1930\'s, Philco built millions of inexpensive \"Cathedral\" radios, but they also built a few very high quality radios, most notably those using the 116 type 11-tube chassis. This is one of those radios. It sold for $175 in 1936, or roughly $3,000 in today\'s money. Wow! No wonder they didn\'t sell very many of these in the middle of the Great Depression. The model 116X console was one of Philco\'s top-of-the-line radios in 1935/36. The radio tunes 5 bands covering all AM frequencies then in use (150KHz to 22.5MHz). The output stage is push-pull 6A3 tubes driving a 12-inch wide-range speaker. In addition to the big speaker, the cabinet contains three passive radiators called \"acoustic clarifiers\" (last photo) that resonate at certain frequencies to even out the response curve. The cabinet is beautifully modern, with clean smooth lines and inlaid veneers. It measures 42\" high by 27\" wide. At only 13\" deep, this console takes up much less space than most 1930\'s console radios. This particular 116X is serial number C37829. The cabinet still has the original factory finish. There are some scratches and scuffs, but no serious veneer damage. Light polishing hides most of the scratches and scuffs. The most serious damage is a visible water stain on the top (photo 7), probably from an unfortunately placed house plant. The grille cloth and knobs are original. This radio is working. I acquired it about 20 years ago and have replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors plus a few critical paper capacitors and some tubes. Other than that, the chassis is completely original, including the cloth power cord and labels. Like all radios of this period this one works best with a suitable outdoor antenna, especially on the shortwave frequencies. In preparing this radio for sale I noticed that the band switch makes some noise when changed, so it would benefit from application of a contact cleaner/lubricator.This radio has been one of the gems in my collection, but my wife has convinced me that we need fewer console radios in our home. So I am reluctantly offering this one to a new owner.

Ihave been collecting and restoring antique radios for more than 30 years. Please watch my future sales for more vintage radio and TV items.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

I don\'t have a lot of silly rules for buyers: Pay for your item and I\'ll send it you. I\'ve been a buyer and a seller on for fifteen years and have a near perfect response record. I\'ll trust you and you can trust me to do right.

I have shipped hundreds of fragile radios and computers all over the world without damage and will pack your Philco 116X with the care and respect it deserves (check my response). Due to the size and weight of this radio I believe that the safest way to ship it is by Greyhound Package Express. Many radio collectors have found this to be the best way to ship large radios. The package will come to the bus station you select, where you can then pick it up. Your total cost for shipping will be Greyhound\'s charges to the station you choose plus $20 for packing materials.

I guarantee that your shipping cost anywhere within the continental USA with the chassis installed will not exceed $100. If you prefer to have the chassis removed and shipped separately, your cost will not exceed $150. If my actual shipping cost is higher I will absorb the excess.

I also offer FREE LOCAL PICKUP in Bend, Oregon, or $50 DELIVERY at a mutually convenient time anywhere along the I-5 corridor between Eugene, Oregon and Portland, Oregon.

Sorry, but this radio is too difficult to ship outside the continental US.
