Antique 38 Star American Flag 9 1/2” X 6 1/8” ~ Carried By WW1 Soldier
Price: US $2550.00

I have had this flag for a couple of years, tucked away in the envelope you see in the photo. I acquired this as part of a lot here at a Maryland sale house.

The flag contains 38 stars (which would age it to 1877 to 1890), and appears to be silk (or possibly silk mix). It measures about 9 1/2” x 6 1/8”. The red & blue colors are still very vibrant, including the stitching! It appears that this flag was kept well-stored and out of light. There are no tears, but what I would call separation of stitching in a few spots (as all threads still seem to be intact). Last photo is a good picture of this. Unusual pattern for stars. I searched the internet for similar pattern, but could not find.

The envelope that I found it in, has the following information written on the outside: “Flag carried by J. Wilson Cari...(I cannot tell what the last couple of letters are...with some research I’m sure it could be deciphered) in 1st World War in France.” The envelope measures 5 x 3 1/2” (and is a bit torn/wrinkled).

There is also a photo (2 1/8” x 1 1/4”) of two soldiers and a woman. Obviously, one of these men is J. Wilson Cari...
