Antique- AMES Civil War M-1840 US Cavalry Dragon Saber Sword Dated 1851
Price: US $172.50
Here is an original M- 1840 saber, called the "wrist breaker". It was a heavycavalry saber, manufactured by AMES in 1851. This model saw extensive useduring the Civil War; both sides used it. The brass pommel cap and guardare unadorned. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company, Cabotville,Massachusetts. The marker’s mark is only partly legible. "AMES MFGCO / CABOTVILLE / 1851", has the“US” stamp. Guard and grip are tight. The original wood grip wasreplaced by antler at some point in it’s hard life. I see many alterations likethis in the Southwest. Damaged swords weretraded down the food chain to local Indians and Spaniards who repaired them. Thetip was also rounded off for some reason. Most of the Indian Pueblos in New Mexico do a ceremonial dance (for 400 years) involving battle with Spanish conquerors in which dancers representing soldiers carry swords and spears. I would guess this was used in that way and blunted for safety reasons. The sword is overall 35“ with a 29 1/2“ blade. According to Tillmann’ssword book there were only 2,250 of these 1851 dated Ames cavalry sabersdelivered that year. Note the desirable early production date. From an old Santa Fe arms collection. I sell my listings with NO returns. Study the pictures before offerding, and ask question if you are unclear about anything. We described things as best we can but we are not experts in every field.
