This superb middle to late 1800’s all wood carving comes from the Black Forest Region of Germany or the environs and measures a most usable 12” tall x 14” wide x 7 ½” deep overall; 8” tall x 5” wide x 6 5/8” deep, head alone. As the images show, this is a veritable portrait with lots of personality and painstaking detail expertly rendered by a member of one of Europe’s finest carving traditions. Look at the leather belt, buckle and bell around the bovine’s neck and the intricate rendering of the shaggy fur atop his head and inside his ears! Its open work mount is no less impressive with naturalistic oak leaves and berries galore. As is typical, the openwork has breaks and glue repairs with minimal loss and it is delicate but stable.
