Description:A Masterful Piece of American Folk Art! Circa 1900-1920 Forged Iron Blacksmith TRADE SIGN Originally Found in Lubbock Texas

Having resided in our personal collection for over a decade, this piece was originally purchased in Houston Texas.  The dealer whom it was purchased from had stated it came out of an estate sale in Lubbock Texas. Having been originally found in a barn near a ranch property, residing in the former owners collection of folk art since 1968.

The piece would have originally hung outside a blacksmith\'s shop, being hung off an iron rod through the top circular hardware mount. All construction and design points to the piece having been made circa 1900-1920; noting some of the tools used in the design elements and the overall construction.

As you can see the profile of the piece has the outer edge being in the form of a horse shoe.  The interior work is truly marvelous with details that really need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated.  The more detailed face of the piece has raised elements of decoration that make up: a set of bellows (below the top hanging mount) center has an anvil with a hammer.  Perched on the side of the anvil is a set of tongs which are reaching into a cooling bucket.  The bucket has individual staves for more detail.  Below the anvil is a smaller to scale sized horseshoe (in size relation to the tools, not an actual horse shoe) To the left of the piece is the profile of a vise; symbolizing the tradesman was a machinest as well.  Bottom has support bar with a \"twist\" decoration\".

Please take a moment to click on the individual images for detailed enlargements of the great original blacksmith forged construction; the tradesman showcasing their talent in the very sign used to advertise their trade.

The reverse of the piece shows reinforcements at areas from the various adornements of the face of the sign.

You\'ll see there are areas of expected age and pitting throughout the piece were it hung against the elements for decades and decades of serving the purpose of advertising the tradesman\'s services.

We\'ve never attempted to clean the piece other than a slight dusting now and again on the surface of the sign.  The reverse has some slightly more oxidation likely from leaning against a barn wall for years.  It\'s current state and Patina makes for an excellent presentation, and we\'ve had it against a white wall highlighting it\'s patina and weathered state.

The piece is LARGE, measuring 31\" tall and 26 1/4\" in width.  The top mounting bracket measures 1 1/2\" in diameter and 1 3/4\" from outer end rim to rim.  The frame is a solid 3/32\" with 1/8\" reinforcements around the frame, the bottom support twist bracket being almost 1/2\" in diameter.  This thick secured construction allowed the piece function with negative space in the design allowing winds to pass through, a remarkable design achievemet; masterfully crafted.

This has been a focal point as a piece of American Folk Art; complimented time and again.  It will make a splendid addition to any decorum or collection of one of a kind Folk Art Advertising.

We are pleased to offer the piece on a ten day sale.

All shipping cost is true cost; we will pay for all boxes and packing material.  Price of shipping quoted is actual cost; for this piece UPS will likely be the most affordable.  Any cost of shipping over estimate we will pay for; any less will be refunded to the purchaser.
