WOW MUSEUM QUALITY EXQUISITE SUPER SHEER GOSSAMER GAUZE

- DESCRIPTION -
Please be patient there are 58 more photos to be loaded in this sale.

An extraordinarily beautiful, early nineteenth century circa 1824 American Federal Period fine white cotton gauze long sleeve gown with a hand embroidered bodice & hem with the original white cotton lawn slip – accompanied by a hand written note establishing ownership, dated 1824. The note reads: “Gown & petticoat Embroidered & owned by Mrs. C.M. Hitchcock about the year 1824” (see close-up).

The long sleeved gown is an exquisite super sheer gossamer gauze, the short sleeve bodice lining is constructed of a fine muslin. There are no string ties or buttons on the bodice (appear to have never had any) so we have it pinned with two straight pins; the gown has two long flat woven cotton-tape ties at the back (currently gathered to a 9-1/2” wide length).

Gown measurements: seam to seam across the shoulder is 15” (we do have it pinned to the hanger so as not to slip off – may be a bit wider across the shoulders); across the bottom of the bodice lining is approximately 12” across in the front (24”). The vertical length from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the hem in the front is 50”; the length in the back under the gathered area is 56”. The sleeve length from the outer shoulder seam is 24” long; the underarm sleeve length is 23”. The width of the hemline stretched out is 55” in the front for a circumference of about 110”.

Gown condition: Remarkable estate condition considering the age – nearly two hundred years old – with a few issues, as follows: (note: both the gown & the slip have been backed away for about 190 years, they have both been hand laundered in gentle unscented soap (no bleach or harsh chemicals!); rinsed in liquid starch for sizing and carefully pressed).

The material is strong, both the gossamer gauze and the fine muslin lining in the bodice. Held to the light there is a 1/8” diameter hole on the front of the gown about 12” up from the hemline; on the back side there are several small holes/tears along the embroidered hemline to include: a 1” L shaped tear to the left of the vertical back seam & a 3/16” hole, next is a ½” wide separation to the gauze with two tiny holes & an area of thinness above the flower to the left of the back seam; there are also a few small scattered holes & some thinness to the gauze in the embroidered hemline to the right of the back seam. The embroidered hemline has another area of tiny scattered holes, some thinness and a ½” diameter (very) light brown stain in the area of the right side seam. There are several old dark pinprick size specks (not holes) on the back of the bodice opening (we have pinned) that we are assuming may have been from some type of pins now gone.

The short sleeved slip is made of a fine quality, thin white cotton lawn. It also has a high Empire waist/seam under the bustline with two darts and short slightly gathered sleeves with a band of dainty embroidery. The neckline has two short cotton ties in the back and a copper hook & eye sewn on with beautiful stitches. (A testament to the incredible attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship in every seam, stitch & nuance of not only the embroidered gown but also the slip).

Measurements of slip: 49-1/2” long from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the hem in the front; 51” long down the back. Seam to seam across the top of the shoulder is 13” (may be slightly wider as we have it pinned to the hanger); 12” wide across the bodice seam; the sleeves are 4” wide across the embroidery (8” diameter). Condition of slip: the material is strong but there are a few more issues than with the gown, to include: has a (very) old and very meticulous professional mend with minute stitches to a 6-1/2” long x 2” wide x 3” high J-shaped tear – so finely executed as to resemble re-weaving of the material. There are numerous (about five) 3/16” diameter or less holes scattered down the front and several pinhead size holes scattered down the back side along with a 5” x 7” area of spotted light brown/orange stains near the front hemline (not dark & not structural). Please see numerous photos of both items for details & specific we may have unwittingly omitted.

A very rare & beautiful neoclassical long sleeved gown & slip with provenance, in desirable condition.

(WE SELDOM USE THE PHRASE \"MUSEUM QUALITY\", BUT FEEL THAT IN THIS CASE IT DOES APPLY.)

The gown is fresh from the attic of a local Georgian brick mansion, “Kingston Hall” – located near Princess Anne in Somerset County on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore. Estimated shipping weight, (packaged) is 3 lbs 8 oz in a 18 x 16 x 8 ************What a great find!

TERMS OF SERVICE

is ALL we do for a living, husband and wife (Norb & Marie) working together, while we home school our kids on our farmette in Rural Delmarva. We have worked very hard to build our little business and it is very important to us. We try and do business the old fashioned way and have a rather simple outlook.

Treat all of your customers as if they are family.

Be courteous, answer emails, be fair in all your deallings and try and make friends of each and every customer.

BUT... with \'s new star rating and the rate increases in the U.S. Postal rates we needed to define and explain our methods of business.

ONE - Who We Deal With

We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.

TWO - Shipping Charges

We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00 for regular sized packages. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE OUR CLIENTS SHIPPING COSTS!!

THREE - International Shipping

We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.

FOUR - Insurance

\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. But... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, but it will be.

FIVE - Methods of Payment Accepted

We aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.

SIX - Time Frame To Pay

We ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on )

SEVEN - Shipping Time Frame

We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.

EIGHT - Local Pickup

Sometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees or relisting.

Finally, NINE - Communication

Please feel free to contact us at anytime, with any question or comment. Unless we are out of town we make an effort to answer all emails as quickly as possible.
