Nice pair of antique leather hooded McClellan Cavalry Stirrups. Both stirrups have the embossed US on the front of the leather hood. The leather hood covers a hickory wood stirrup. Both of the leather hoods are in good condition, the leather is still pliable, no rips or tears to the leather. . Stitching around the edge of the leather hood is undamaged. The hoods are attached to the hickory stirrup with three rivets on each side, all rivets are intact, none are pulling through. The hickory stirrups are in good condition, one of the wood stirrups has a small piece of wood missing on the underside of the stirrup strap bar ( see last photo ). The stirrup is still sound and usable I just mentioned the missing wood because you see it when the stirrup is off the stirrup strap. This type of McClellan stirrup would have been used on the Cavalry model saddle between the late 1800\'s to WW1. This set of stirrups could be used on a McClellan Civil War saddle or a McClellan Indian war model saddle by dying the leather black, the color is about the only difference between the Civil War McClellan saddle and the later saddles . McClellan saddles from the Civil war and Indian wars were black, the saddle color changed to brown in 1900 and stayed brown up to the end of production Nice set of original stirrups to use on a McClellan Cavalry saddle restoration project. Or use for Civil War Cavalry re enacting. Nice pair of Antique Cavalry stirrups.
