A Chinese Ming dynasty painted and glazed pottery figure of a gentleman, dating to 1368 – 1644 AD.

Wearing a long, loose overcoat, this gentleman seems attired for the cold climes of a Chinese winter. He covers his right hand with the long folds of his sleeve, the left is absent, likely it originally held lamp or accessory. His coat is tied at the waist by a turquoise belt, he wears a distinctive cap with a red tassel emerging from the top. The facial features are finely modelled, and give a sense of a man to whom life has been kind.

A wonderfully artistic and inventive example of small scale Ming terracotta sculpture.

Condition: Very good, unrestored. Head detachable.
