Folk Art Figural \"Jacquot\" Style Dijon Mustard Pot
Unique figural mustard pot that bears a striking resemblance to “Pots Jacquot” style pitchers/jugs made in the Desvres region of Northern France. Depicts a man in a flamboyantly decorated costume that is more workman-like than the typical peasant garb usually seen. He is seated on a stool with a barrel marked “Moutarde de Dijon” between his legs. Hand painted facial features are somewhat crude (if not downright creepy) and include a delightful curled handlebar mustache & a pair of beauty spots.
White tin glazed buff colored earthenware body is hand painted in the typical palette; decoration colors include “Delft” blue, lemon yellow, iron red & sage green, as well as lavender & chocolate brown detailing.
Piece is unmarked with no indication of maker or origin.
Measurements: 9 ¾” high x 4” wide x 5 ½” deep
Excellent condition overall with no major damage or repairs. Has a few tiny/small surface flakes in the glaze; the largest is on the back corner of the stool and tiny ones are on & near the rim of the pot and on the rim & crown of the cap.
Also has some manufacturing glaze misses; most notably on the cap brim, but also on the cap edges & face of the barrel. Pot probably had a lid/cover that is long gone. Slug from the airhole in the base is still rattling around inside the hollow body.
