AntiqueGem Set Butterfly Chatelaine Purse

French *Circa 1900s

This fancymesh purse is made of a golden colored metal and the top is an ovalfiligree panel featuring abutterfly set with amethyst colored gems. It hangs from a chain with achatelaine clip at the top and the bag is made of mesh links. The clipis also gem set. It snapsclosed securely. Inside the top is a beveled mirror (original andmissing some of the silvering).

Aside fromone missing \"gem\", the entirepiece is in great condition and attached to the frame all around. Thebottom has a fringe made of little metal balls. The purse (withoutchain) is 4 3/4\" long by 3 1/8\" wide. From the top of the chatelaineclip to the bottom of the purse is 9 1/2\" long. Asimilar butterfly purse with turquoises rather than amethysts is shownon p.180 of Chatelaines,Utility to Glorious Extravagance by Genevieve Cummins& Nerylla Taunton.
